Generally, the process of repositioning has the power to deconstruct practices of racism and make possible the disassociation of whiteness with terror in the black imagination. A critical intervention, it allows for the recognition that progressive white people who are antiracist might be able to understand the way in which their cultural practices reinscribe white supremacy without promoting paralyzing guilt or denial.

bell hooks, Representations of Whiteness in the Black Imagination (via hollovv)

bingo.

This is the problem with social justice tumblr blogs and the white feminists who so often like to refer to themselves as allies to people of color. When asked to consider, as hooks writes, how they “might be able to understand the way in which their cultural practices reinscribe white supremacy”, they almost always respond with “guilt and denial.” Almost always.

Love this quote.
